Apple’s quarter earnings exceeded mobile phone sales

US tech giant Apple Inc (GOOG) performed well in the latest quarter with higher-than-expected sales and earnings, but the phone sales were below expectations and the outlook was not optimistic.

February 1, Apple released a report shows that as of December 30, 2017 “first quarter”, the company achieved sales revenue of 88.3 billion US dollars, compared with the same period last year (as of December 30, 2016 Of the quarter) rose 13%; net profit of 20.07 billion USdollars, an increase of 12.2%; adjusted, equivalent to 3.89 US dollars net income per share (EPS), 16% higher than the same period last year, also higher than previously expected market of 3.86 US dollars ; Apple’s cash reserves reached 285.1 billion U.S. dollars, setting a new high.

Apple mobile phone sales showed a year-on-year decline, with 77.3 million units sold in the quarter, lower than the market’s estimated 80.3 million units, down 1% from the same period of last year. However, due to the higher price of the new handset, sales rose 13%. Apple’s average selling price reached 796 US dollars, higher than the market expected 756 US dollars.

Apple’s chief financial officer Luca Maestri said the holiday in 2017 had been shortened by a week in comparison to 2016, limiting iPhone sales. He emphasized that “Apple has strong handset sales in all regions.”

The announced earnings include Apple’s latest flagship iPhone X, which was launched in November 2017. The phone, which costs as little as $ 999, is Apple’s first newly designed cellphone since the launch of the iPhone 6 in 2015, equipped with facial recognition and was originally expected to spark a new wave of sales.

But in fact, the iPhone X price is too high limit the growth of demand. According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, due to less-than-expected holiday shopping season for iPhone X in Europe, the United States and China, Apple has halved its production target for the first three months of 2018 to about 20 million units.
